Great news! You have finally heard back that you are needed back for a second job interview. You are so excited that you just keep smiling. So what do you do next? Well you begin by doing much more preparation then you did for the first interview, of course! This job interview may be just the opportunity that you need to make a good impression on, probably, a different group of people on a panel since you know that you are seriously being considered for the position.
Be Sure To Do the Research
Sure, you did some research before the first interview but you should do even more now that you are going to the next round. There just may be some major changes that have taken place since you attended the first interview and you want to make sure you are aware of them. As you prepare for this interview, try to gather more information about the companies interaction so you can put that into your responses to the questions. You may also find some information that will help to convince the interviewers that you are the right person for this job for sure.
Be Aware of the Agenda
You cannot hurt anything if you inquire with the human resources department or their staff about the agenda that will be used for the second interview. You can, at the minimum, gain a better understanding of the process and be more prepared. You should know by now how important it is to be prepared.
You should ask questions about when, what, where, and how the second job interview will proceed. An example would be that many companies are spending an entire day with a prospective employee and asking them to analyze the company as they expose them to it. You may also be asked to spend a little time with people that are in related departments so the interviewers can see how you will fit in. You may even get the opportunity to meet with the chairman so they can form an opinion of you as well.
No matter what the agenda is, you should arrive ready to take it on. If you take the time to ask about it in advance you are much less likely to be caught off guard.
Go Over Your Interview Questions
As you look over your first interview and think of areas that you could have polished up and made more appealing, know that the second interview will serve as your chance to redeem yourself. You may find that many of the same questions are asked during the second interview but are phrased in a slightly different way.
That is why you should go back to the list of interview questions that you prepared for in the beginning and really work your answers to where they will stand out. As you prepare you will surely find that you are more relaxed and composed when you enter into the next career changing interview.
You should also consider all of the things that you did not have the time to discuss during the first interview but would like to discuss in this one. You should go over the notes that you wrote about your first interview to see if you need to clarify anything or make a stronger point about it. You should add your comments quickly so you do not look too indecisive in your thoughts.
Once you have gotten to this point in the interview process you should also spend some time looking at the organizational charts and job description to make sure that you will truly enjoy the work and will fit in well. While the job market is tight, taking a position at a company that you will be miserable at is not the right answer for anyone.
Asking the Right Questions
When you are in the second round of job interviews you should expect to ask questions about the job to the interviewers. While you should have asked the right questions in the first interview as well, this time you should have well thought out questions to ask.
You definitely want to come off as intelligent, informed and very interested in the position during the second job interview even if you are almost certain that you have gotten the position. Keep in mind that the executives at the company may, at any time, change their minds if you are sloppy and not up to the challenge of the second interview.
Stay on the Path of the Usual Protocol
You should, of course, still plan on following the protocol of dressing in the appropriate attire, calling to confirm the date and time, and arriving thirty minutes, at least, early for your appointment time. Be sure to take all things, like travel time, traffic, and other possible delays into consideration when you plan on what time to leave for the job interview. It is much better for the interviewer to be late then for them to have to wait on you. Chances are good that a busy executive may not even wait for you to arrive if you are late.
Follow these guidelines and you will do well in the second job interview and be on the right path to get the job.
