If you plan on finding a high paying job you must realize that the difference in obtaining that job, over your competition, is how you prepare yourself for the job interview, in a way that separates you from the other potential hires. How you dress and the colors you choose can actually make a difference to the hiring personnel. Knowing as much about the job opening and mixing that into your interview questions will add depth to your interview and give you the edge you are hoping for when the competition is hot on your trail.
A high paying job is much more difficult to land in this type of economy, but if you can accept some pointers as fact and present yourself accordingly, you can beat out 90 percent of your competition.
1. Dress appropriately for the job interview. Unless it is a high level desk or corporate type job, avoid wearing a suit. Looking challenging to the interviewer can cause you to miss out. Sharp but not overly so. Never wear red, be it a dress or shirt. Red is overpowering and you do not want to give the interviewer a complex.
2. Limit your questions that you ask about the job. Being too inquisitive can come off as a busy body type and you talk too much and do not get your work done.
3. Describe yourself as a steady worker that is self motivating. If I see something that should be addressed or completed I will point it out and ask if I may complete the job. This gives a feeling of being aggressive but not over bearing.
4. I can work well with others. My disposition is flexible and I realize it takes teamwork to work efficiently. I can take instructions well and if I am not sure of a task I will ask for clarification.
5. Let the interviewer know that whether they choose you or someone else you are very appreciative of the opportunity to be considered. Politeness goes a long way and your comments will linger, good or bad with the interviewer. Say yes sir or ma’am, people like to be groomed in either direction, as the boss or the employee.
6. In your closing comments during the interview, ask when you should expect a confirmation or decline for your employment. Explain that you have some other job appointments that could come in at the same time and I would prefer this job, but I don’t want to miss the other opportunity should you not choose me for this one. This will prompt the interviewer to act as quickly as possible and they will understand your position.
7. Be sure to repeat the interviewer’s name as you close in the interview. Everyone likes to hear their name mentioned and remembered. It’s the little things that make the difference sometimes.
8. A high paying job warrants both parties to be frank and up front, so do not try to overstate your capabilities. If you are not fully familiar with a job task, explain that you need some clarification on this item or that item, so that you can show that you are not afraid to ask when unsure. This is not considered a weakness but rather a positive attribute.
9. Especially with a high paying job, a very accurate and easily read resume is a must have. Explain to the interviewer that if they have any questions with your resume you are willing to elaborate if need be. This lets them know that you aren’t trying to fake any part of your work history. Believe me, people over state their credits on a regular basis.
10. Lastly, thank your interviewer and have poise as you walk away, don’t rush out. If you have any questions as you begin to leave, be sure they pertain to the job opening and not about job tasks that are above the position you are trying to land. This gives the appearance of an overly aggressive person that is trying to move up before they have worked their first day on the job. You will have time later to inquire about other tasks or jobs once you are hired.
