Succeeding in a Job Interview

These are highly competitive times for individuals and businesses alike. Businesses now want and also require skilled workers who can bring innovation, quick and good decision making. A job interview lets a potential employer know what kind of employee he is about to get.

For this purpose it is always best to be armed with knowledge about the interview, the employing company or industry, the profession and general knowledge. Therefore to get a job, it is advisable to be prepared for a job interview.

TYPE OF INTERVIEW

It will be helpful if one can assess what kind of interview he will be facing at the meeting. This will help the interviewee to prepare according to the setup he will be facing.

o The Screening Interview: It is the very first interview where the interviewer evaluates the achievement of minimum requirements by the interviewee for a second more detailed interview.

o The Stress Interview: This is the interview where interviewer introduces stress artificially and assesses if the candidate is able to cope with it. This is done by usually asking weird and provocative questions.

o The Selection Interview: In this interview the employer knows that the candidate is qualified, but here employer ascertains if the candidate “fits in” with other co-workers.

o The Group Interview: Several job candidates are interviewed at once in this type. This is done to ascertain if the candidate is a “team player”.

o The Panel Interview: Here there is more than one interviewer interviewing a candidate and may contain traits of other interview types such as stress interview.

RESEARCH THE EMPLOYER

One should gather as much information on the employer as is possible. This will make the interviewee appear informed and intelligent. It will prepare the interviewee for possible interview type as well. Doing such research will able the candidate to deduce what the outcome of interview may be.

LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF

It is very helpful if the candidates know attributes about themselves. Identifying ones own weaknesses and strengths will not only help the candidate prepare adequately for the type of interview they may be facing but also help them answer questions better during the interview.

PRACTICE

After one has knowledge about the employer, own personality attributes and type of interview, one would need a little practice. Rehearsing before an interview will the candidate sound spontaneous while answering questions, know how to answer to questions and help improve eye-contact and body language, leading to succeed job interview.
